--------------------

We are currently at the dawn of what smart contracts can do. There are industries, such as financial services, insurance, healthcare, etc., that are already using smart contracts. Within and outside those industries, there is a wide breadth of areas that could be disrupted by the application of smart contracts. This hackathon is about exploring uncharted areas in this new age of smart contracts!

Whether your personal end goal is to learn something cutting edge, win one of the insane cash prizes, or put smart contract development in your resume, this hackathon is where you start! We will introduce you to next-gen language and platform called Daml used by the likes of the Australian Securities Exchange, Hong Kong Clearing and Exchanges, and Nasdaq, just to name a few.

We will give you the tools and show you how to use them. We will even help you get certified for FREE. You bring your creativity, expertise, and energy!

Developing a full production-quality solution or platform will need time, so the right first step is to identify and learn to use the right scalable and versatile tool to create a compelling functional prototype that shows off the potential of smart contracts in tackling a well-defined problem.

Here’s an overview of the timetable for the hackathon.

Step 1. Register for the Hackathon

Register for the Hackathon on the Hackathon Website by clicking the “Join Hackathon” button. To complete registration, sign up to create a free Devpost account, or log in with an existing Devpost account. This will enable you to receive important updates and to create your Submission.

Step 2. Ramp Up

Walk through one or more of several materials/resources that we have available:

  • Daml 101 Series on YouTube. For those who prefer a more piecemeal video-based learning and those who are new to the world of blockchain and smart contracts, we have prepared a video series that takes you from the context to implementation. Start at the beginning or jump right into any episode.

Link: bit.ly/damlone

Time: Approx. 5 to 15 mins per episode

  • Free Video Course. This is a 6-episode course that is intended to get a developer ready to be certified, but the coverage is exactly what you will need to get started! We recommend episodes 1 and 2 for a great overview. Once you are comfortable with the content there, come back for more!

Link: bit.ly/damltraining

Time: Approx. 2 hrs 15 mins (for episodes 1 & 2)

  • Online Documentation. For those who prefer a self-guided pace of learning, we recommend selected sections on our website to get a good overview of Daml. Specifically, check out Installing the SDK in the Getting started section, and then the first 7 chapters in the Writing Daml section.

  • Interactive Tutorial. Guided hands-on could be your preference and if so, check out the amazing and entirely web-based interactive tutorial! The three exercises in Get Started with Daml alone will get you well on your way to writing amazing Daml apps!

Link: https://daml.com/learn

Estimated Time: 1 hr 40 mins (for exercises in Get Started with Daml)

  • Free Webinar! One of our partners, EPAM, is working with us to organize a 2 hour webinar around DA and Daml for a community they manage! This event will be live and recorded, and is scheduled for September 14th, 3 to 5 pm GMT +8.

Estimated Time: 2 hrs

Step 3. Ideate and Define your Project

Choose and define a small problem in one of the following industries:

  • Finance/Financial Services

  • Insurance

  • Healthcare

  • Supply Chain/Inventory Management

  • or in another well-defined industry or space, like education, entertainment, manufacturing, etc.

We will give you a checklist to run your proposed project against to make sure that it is feasible within the hackathon timeframe and that it is in scope. You can, needless to say, reach out to us (hackathon@digitalasset.com) to help you ensure that you are on the right track!

Need some ideas or inspiration? Check out this video: https://youtu.be/Rc5JvroBnmI

Read the Rules on scope, eligibility, etc.

Step 4. Implement your Project

Start coding up your solution and at any time when you have a technical question or a hackathon-related question, we are here to help! You can choose any frontend clients you want – web, mobile, desktop, etc.) but we will host your Daml code for free on Daml Hub. This will make more sense later!

Your completed submission should be built using Daml and deployed on Daml Hub and you are free to use whatever frontend platforms you would like. Due to the expected volume of submissions and our commitment to evaluate every submission, we are discouraging projects that will require special devices, gadgets, etc.

If and when you have a question, there’re plenty of ways to get answers as well!

  • Forums: This is your number one stop because chances are you are not the first to encounter something and if you don’t find an answer there, post your question there!

  • Documentation: We are constantly improving and adding to our documentation, so there is a good chance you will find your answers here as well!

  • Office hours: We will be posting office hours after we get a good sense of what timezones we need to cover.

  • YouTube: Our YouTube has a great collection of videos that go through topics that you may want to learn more about.

  • Email: Needless to say, we are always contactable at hackathon@DigitalAsset.com!

Step 5. Submit your Project!

Complete rules are found in the RULES section, but to complete your submission, there are just a few things you need to submit:

  • a single paragraph with

  1. Introduction of yourself (your name, location, profession, etc.)
  2. Definition of the problem you tackled
  • a link to your code in GitHub (we are at hackathon@DigitalAsset.com) and a ledger Id to your Daml Hub (this will make more sense later).

  • an accessible short video (uploaded to YouTube, etc.) no more than 10 minutes in duration with the following sections in the video.

  1. A simple demo of the key feature/function of your project (No code)
  2. A walkthrough of your Daml code / templates
  3. Any concluding remarks about your project.

TIP: You can simply use Zoom to save a recording of your demo

BONUS: 1:1 Mentorship Office Hours!

In addition to getting your project viewed and evaluated by the judges, we have arranged for the top 10 finalists to meet with a set of decorated execs, architects, and engineers to give you deeper feedback on your project! We are looking to add more mentors, but here's a list of mentor who are already signed up!
